On the occasion of International Women’s Day on 8th March, the Union for the Mediterranean joins the international community in stressing the need to provide all women with the same rights and opportunities as men. Women in the Mediterranean region are too absent in decision-making, too few in formal jobs and too often victims of violence, yet they constitute the greatest hope for a region that aspires to stability and prosperity. That is why the UfM has set gender equality and women’s empowerment as one of its major priorities in its efforts to promote stability, regional integration and inclusive human development.
Annual conferences gathering key stakeholders to explore new challenges and responses for women in the region, multi-stakeholder regional dialogue to identify good practices, preparation of the Fourth Ministerial Conference on Strengthening the Role of Women in Society to map out a new agenda for action, promotion of concrete projects to benefit women in the region: these are just some of the ways in which the UfM engages with its Member States to enhance equality between men and women as a solution for building a Euro-Mediterranean region which is better able to meet its challenges.
