26 June 2018<\/strong>\u00a0– \u00ab\u00a0We stress the importance of structuring Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in marine and maritime sectors to encompass a broad range of objectives comprising the creation of new, blue jobs and social well-being while also being mindful of sustainable development and the preservation of the environment in the Mediterranean area\u00a0\u00bb declared at La Valletta\u00a0UfM R&I\u00a0Ministers, together with the EU Commissioners, a year ago. After the set-up of the\u00a0Group of Senior Officials\u00a0BLUEMED\u00a0Working Group<\/a>\u00a0as\u00a0new\u00a0governing body of the\u00a0BLUEMED\u00a0Initiative (February 2018), the first operative steps towards the realization of the Valletta declaration\u00a0are now taking place\u00a0with the first\u00a0BLUEMED\u00a0National\u00a0Consultation Days being organized by\u00a0non-EU Countries (25-27\u00a0<\/sup>June and\u00a03-6 July).<\/p>\n

Meetings are held\u00a0in Algiers (Algeria),\u00a0La Marsa (Tunisia),\u00a0Ankara (Turkey),\u00a0Alexandria (Egypt) and\u00a0Amman (Jordan).\u00a0The participants\u00a0are invited to\u00a0discuss\u00a0the state of the collaboration around the Mediterranean basin,\u00a0confront\u00a0on the key enabling knowledge, technologies and sectors needed to sustain and foster blue growth and sustainability in the\u00a0region\u00a0and elaborat\u00a0on the next activities to envisage in order to meet the challenges of the future. Their contributions will provide\u00a0direct\u00a0inputs\u00a0for updating\u00a0the\u00a0BLUEMED\u00a0Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, as first milestone towards establishing shared priorities\u00a0at the regional level of the Mediterranean\u00a0and starting the development of an implementation plan to realize joint actions.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0extension of the\u00a0BLUEMED\u00a0Initiative\u00a0to non EU countries\u00a0is aimed at sharing information and knowledge base among\u00a0Mediterranean countries and agree on common targets and objectives. The\u00a0series of national events, hence,\u00a0marks an important step towards\u00a0a renewed engagement to foster research and innovation in the\u00a0marine- and\u00a0maritime-related fields and the promotion of scientific diplomacy among the concerned countries.<\/p>\n

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM)\u00a0actively takes part to\u00a0the\u00a0BLUEMED\u00a0National Consultation Days, organized by the national delegates to the GSO\u00a0BLUEMED\u00a0WG, along with representatives of the European Commission, and of the\u00a0consortium of the\u00a0BLUEMED\u00a0Coordination and Support Action.\u00a0After this tour in non-EU countries, the\u00a0BLUEMED\u00a0members will gather again next October at the\u00a0occasion of the\u00a0BLUEMED\u00a0week\u00a0at the UfM premises\u00a0in Barcelona.<\/p>\n

BLUEMED\u00a0is the research and innovation Initiative for promoting the blue economy in the Mediterranean Basin through cooperation. It is the strategy of reference for the Mediterranean countries to work together for a healthy, safe and productive Mediterranean Sea. The\u00a0BLUEMED\u00a0Initiative will contribute to the creation of new \u2018blue\u2019 jobs, social well being and a sustainable growth in the marine and maritime sectors through the implementation of its Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda, the\u00a0BLUEMED\u00a0SRIA.<\/p>\n
