S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eaports are vital connecting hubs for international trade, port-related\u00a0industry,\u00a0and passenger travel. As such they influence urban spatial planning and development. They also attract thousands of employees\u00a0who work on ships\u00a0and onshore to operate various port- and industry-related activities. While seaports and their related activities contribute to urban economies,\u00a0they also add\u00a0to\u00a0pollution\u00a0of, for example,\u00a0air, soil,\u00a0noise,\u00a0and water, and\u00a0contribute to\u00a0greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions\u00a0can potentially have\u00a0negative consequences for human health and the environment, including\u00a0through\u00a0climate change.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Life quality and health concerns extend from port\u00a0employees\/workers\u00a0to local residents,\u00a0and the rest of the city-region can be affected by shipping activities, terminal operations, and port-related industrial or transport activities (e.g.\u00a0petrochemical plants, trucking). European port cities\u00a0vary greatly\u00a0in terms of the scale and scope of their activity.\u00a0They also\u00a0differ\u00a0widely\u00a0in\u00a0their\u00a0response\u00a0to local tensions and issues regarding health and environment,\u00a0being more or less\u00a0environmentally aware in tackling these problems.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In this workshop,\u00a0an\u00a0overview of\u00a0environmental and\u00a0health\u00a0aspects in\u00a0seaport cities\u00a0will be presented, and\u00a0consequences\u00a0of\u00a0port-related\u00a0air,\u00a0soil, noise,\u00a0and water pollution\u00a0for\u00a0health conditions of inhabitants\u00a0of\u00a0seaport\u00a0cities\u00a0will be discussed.\u00a0Participants will\u00a0be\u00a0reflecting\u00a0upon\u00a0how\u00a0those conditions\u00a0could be addressed\u00a0from an urban perspective.\u00a0The cases\u00a0of the ports of\u00a0Dunkirk (France),\u00a0Haifa (Israel), Hamburg (Germany)\u00a0and\u00a0Southampton (UK)\u00a0will be presented,\u00a0in addition to a summary of\u00a0good practices\u00a0in\u00a0various cities and ports.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The UfM Regional Platform on Sustainable Urban Development was launched in 2017 to deliver on the mandate of the Second UfM Ministerial Conference on Sustainable Urban Development in implementing the UfM Urban Agenda. Since then, the UfM Thematic Working Groups on \u201cUrban Regeneration\u201d and \u201cAffordable and Sustainable Housing\u201d have been working for the operationalisation of the UfM Urban Agenda, along with the UfM Permanent Working Group on Evaluation, Monitoring and Reporting Systems, and the UfM-IFIs Urban Project Committee.\u00a0In light of\u00a0a two-year long, multistakeholder, iterative consultative process held under the auspices of the UfM Regional Platform, an academic team from the Delft University of Technology, comprising Associate Professor Roberto Rocco, Professor Carola Hein and Associate Professor Remon Rooij, have drafted the UfM Strategic Urban Development Action Plan 2040 and its Housing Action Plan. The Strategic Action Plan highlights nine priority axes of intervention to facilitate the translation of ideas and frameworks contained therein into strategic projects to enhance integrated territorial development.\u00a0 One of those axes of intervention is \u201cForelands, port areas, port cities and their hinterlands, as drivers of sustainable and resilient economic prosperity\u201d, which will be developed separately in collaboration with partner institutions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0WHO\u00a0European\u00a0Centre\u00a0for Environment and Health<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">supports the European\u00a0Process on\u00a0Environment and\u00a0Health, initiated by\u00a0the WHO Regional Office for Europe\u00a0in 1989.\u00a0 The process\u00a0provides\u00a0a unique intersectoral policy platform, which\u00a0brings\u00a0together relevant sectors and partners to\u00a0help\u00a0shape policies and actions on environment and health,\u00a0and\u00a0supports\u00a0the implementation of effective,\u00a0evidence-based policies and\u00a0preventive\u00a0actions on environment,\u00a0health\u00a0and well-being in the WHO European Region.\u00a0Current activities focus on\u00a0priorities established at\u00a0the Sixth Ministerial Conference on Environment and Health, held in Ostrava, Czechia,\u00a0in 2017, reflecting commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals\u00a0of the\u00a02030 Agenda.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Ministerial Conference adopted the Ostrava Declaration on Environment and Health<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">1<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0by\u00a0which Member States committed\u00a0themselves to drawing up a tailored national portfolio for action in seven priority areas for the European Environment and Health Process.\u00a0Priorities include\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cSupporting the efforts of European cities and regions to become healthier and more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable through an integrated, smart and health-promoting approach to urban and spatial\u00a0planning,\u2026\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding in 2020 to collaborate across sectors in reinforcing the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.\u00a0 This institutional partnership aims to support UfM Member States in building capacity and\u00a0promoting\u00a0action for health, including through health research, health education and advocacy for health, in all policy domains of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership.\u00a0 In this context, the webinar will help to raise awareness about\u00a0and promote healthy environments through urban development and governance in seaport cities.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ufmsecretariat.org\/\/form-environment-and-health-in-seaport-cities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Register<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>17 June 2021, from 10:00 to 11:30\u00a0hrs.
