
{"id":71424,"date":"2018-10-26T12:48:32","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T11:48:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ufmsecretariat.org\/\/2018-osce-mediterranean-conference\/"},"modified":"2018-11-27T09:56:59","modified_gmt":"2018-11-27T08:56:59","slug":"2018-osce-mediterranean-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ufmsecretariat.org\/fr\/2018-osce-mediterranean-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"L&#8217;UpM participe \u00e0 la Conf\u00e9rence m\u00e9diterran\u00e9enne de l&#8217;OSCE de 2018 visant \u00e0 renforcer les synergies euro-m\u00e9diterran\u00e9ennes et la coop\u00e9ration r\u00e9gionale"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"x_s13\">\n<p><strong>UfM\u00a0Secretary\u00a0General\u00a0Nasser Kamel\u00a0was invited by the OSCE Slovak presidency and Spain to be a special speaker in the opening session of the 2018 OSCE Mediterranean Conference in Malaga,\u00a0addressing the importance of energy for economic growth and co-operation in the Mediterranean<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>UfM and OSCE Secretariats signed a Memorandum of Understanding to deepen cooperation between the two institutions and serve as framework of ongoing joint-projects<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Malaga, 25\u00a0and 26\u00a0October 2018<\/strong>.\u00a0The\u00a0Union for the Mediterranean had an active participation in the OSCE 2018 Mediterranean Conference, held over two days in the Spanish city of Malaga.<\/p>\n<p>In a conference dedicated to \u201cThe importance of Energy for economic growth and co-operation in the Mediterranean\u201d,\u00a0Deputy-Secretary General\u00a0responsible for Energy and Climate Action,\u00a0Jorge Borrego,\u00a0presented the UfM\u2019s actions in the field of Energy and energetic transition, namely in \u201cReshaping the benefits of renewables\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary-General, Ambassador\u00a0Nasser Kamel, was a special speaker in the Opening session of the Ministerial segment, and had the opportunity to elaborate on the importance of\u00a0Energy for economic growth and co-operation in the Mediterranean, with particular emphasis to the facilitator role that the UfM\u00a0is developing as a platform for debate and policies reform at the regional level,\u00a0notably through the establishment of its UfM Energy Platforms.<\/p>\n<p>In his intervention,\u00a0Ambassador Kamel had the opportunity to\u00a0praise\u00a0the\u00a0efforts of the\u00a0OSCE, through its Mediterranean partnership, in\u00a0promoting\u00a0a meaningful and constructive dialogue in the\u00a0Euro-Mediterranean\u00a0region, on a number of topics that are at the heart of the UfM agenda, like environment and climate, and helping establishing the\u00a0linkages between energy, security, economic growth and poverty reduction.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0UfM\u00a0Secretary General\u00a0mentioned the relevance of regional dialogue in promoting best-practices and common approaches to the necessary energy transition that has to be developed in the Euro-Mediterranean area, as well as the pivotal role of the private sector and financing institutions in its implementation.<\/p>\n<p>Secretary General Kamel and his counterpart of OSCE, Ambassador Thomas Greminger, signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will allow for the reinforcement of cooperation and complementarities\u00a0between the\u00a0work developed by the\u00a0two institutions.\u00a0The MoU focuses on\u00a0gender equality and women\u2019s empowerment, youth engagement and participation and education\/research. The ongoing joint-project\u00a0\u201cPrevention of Climate and Environment Security Threats in the Mediterranean\u201d is a first example.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe OSCE and the UfM are complementary organizations: overlapping membership, shared commitment to co-operation and peace, with the OSCE more focused on security and UfM on economic-social issues. We look forward to closer co-operation and co-ordination over the coming months. Concrete work lays ahead of us,\u201d said Greminger.<\/p>\n<p>In the margins of the 2018 Mediterranean conference in Malaga, the SG Nasser Kamel held a number of bilateral meetings with representatives of OSCE participating countries, namely the Slovak MFA, (Miroslav Laj\u010d\u00e1k) and the Greek Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (Terens Quick), among others.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span class=\"x_s18\">About the UfM<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"x_s17\"><span class=\"x_s20\">The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM)<\/span><span class=\"x_s21\">\u00a0is an intergovernmental organisation bringing together 43 countries: 28 EU member states and 15 Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries. It provides a platform for political dialogue, coordination, and regional cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_s17\"><span class=\"x_s20\">The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean<\/span><span class=\"x_s21\">, established in Barcelona in 2010, focuses on implementing regional cooperation projects and initiatives in areas such as energy, environment, education, transport, business development and social affairs.
