Climate: the Mediterranean Hotspot, from scenarios to solutions

Day: 8/11/2022
Time: 17:30 -
 18:30 (Egypt local time, CET+1)
Place: Mediterranean Pavilion
Organised by: Union for the Mediterranean, Energy and Climate Action Division

The Mediterranean Basin is the second most impacted area by climate change, warming 20% faster than the global average. It faces challenges of its own that can transform into regional instability. Indeed, the extremely severe and accelerated impacts, whose tragic consequences we have seen again this summer in various Mediterranean countries, overlap with a dangerous socio-economic asymmetry and lack of integration across the region. However, the Mediterranean is also a cradle of solutions – public policies and private initiatives – and explored potentials that can be scaled up globally.

In this light, the CoP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, hosted by a Mediterranean country, is timelier than ever in building important regional momentum in the fight against climate change. In this framework, the UfM Secretariat is coordinating a coalition of twelve strategic partners to give voice to the region within the first-ever Mediterranean Pavilion in the long history of climate negotiations. At the crossroads of three continents and covering 42 countries, the Mediterranean region needs common solutions as no nation or community can tackle this challenge on its own. Only by joining forces can common solutions be built upon.

This event aims to highlight these severe challenges as well as to illustrate, share, scale up and discuss the advanced solutions and initiatives applied and planned in the region. Since an effective and rapid transition in the Region requires joint efforts by all actors, the event gives voice to the different kinds of stakeholders – ranging from public and private, scientific and academic, civil society, finance and business – engaged in catalyzing a sustainable transition through collective and scalable innovation.
