Advancing Sustainable Blue Economy (SBE) at Mediterranean level requires joint and concerted actions. The Side Event will bring together a small but exemplary representation of the large and dynamic Mediterranean SBE Community, highlighting key initiatives and projects relevant to capacity building, research, innovation, investments, and private sector among others, directly contributing to addressing climate change and accelerating the transition towards carbon- neutral and circular economies in line with the priorities of the 2021 UfM SBE Ministerial Declaration. Since 2015, the 42 Euro-Mediterranean UfM countries are pooling energies and resources in advancing towards a sustainable blue economy, which combines the overarching objective of protecting and restoring the Mediterranean Sea, thus maintaining and enhancing its long-term value, with sustainable maritime activities, offering a long-lasting source of growth, innovation, and jobs for the whole region. The 2021 UfM Ministerial Declaration on Sustainable Blue Economy renews the political and operational mandate of the 42 Euro-Mediterranean countries around joint principles and actions to maximize the needed convergence of efforts around the following priorities: o Governance and the future of sea basin strategies in the Med region o Marine research and innovation, skills, careers and employment o Sustainable food from the sea: fisheries and aquaculture o Sustainable, climate-neutral and zero-pollution maritime transport and ports o Interactions between marine litter and the blue economy o Coastal and maritime tourism o MSP and ICZM o MRE Maritime safety and security of blue economy activities o Sustainable investment in the blue economy Agenda
