Gender-oriented Climate Action is a must: what can be done

Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt – 14 November 2022

  • The case for steering climate finance towards gender equality is clear, but needs to be more widely understood. This high-level panel, led by UfM Gender Equality expert Anna Dorangricchia, reflects on the issue in the Mediterranean region and shares lessons learned on best practices.
  • Last October 26th in Madrid, UfM’s members signed a Ministerial Declaration on Strengthening the Role of Women in Society, highlighting the need for integration of gender into climate finance.

As strongly pointed out by the recent OECD publication Supporting women’s empowerment through green policies and finance, gender equality and environmental goals are intrinsically linked and mutually reinforcing. Finance is a powerful tool for addressing inequalities: but both goals can be effectively achieved only if all the key actors agree on the assumption women are agents of change for a sustainable and just green transition.

Therefore, integrating gender into climate finance and policy making is a must, not a good to have. This need is among the key pillars of the UfM’s Ministerial Declaration on Strengthening the Role of Women in Society adopted last 26 October in Madrid.

In this top event taking place at the first-ever Mediterranean Pavilion, the UfM Gender Equality Programme Manager Anna Dorangricchia will moderate a discussion on which concrete actions the Cop27 participants should take towards a gender-oriented climate action. She will be joined by several high-level speakers:

  • Håkan Emsgård, Swedish Ambassador to Egypt
  • Michael MULLAN Economist/Policy Analyst, Environment Directorate Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD)
  • Sunita Pitamber, Associate Director, Access to Services and Gender Mainstreaming, Gender and Economic Inclusion, EBRD
