The Entangled Destiny initiative – supported by the National Geographic Society and the European Forest Institute Mediterranean Facility (EFIMED) – will take part in COP30 in Belém, Brazil, bringing Mediterranean perspectives on biocultural heritage, climate resilience, and traditional ecological knowledge to the global stage.
As part of the Italian Pavilion programme at AquaPraça, Entangled Destiny will host the side event “Entangled Destiny: Trees and Humans of the Mediterranean”, inviting participants to reflect on the deep-rooted relationships between Mediterranean communities and three iconic tree species: the olive, carob, and stone pine. Through an interactive experience followed by a panel discussion, the session will explore how cultural heritage and traditional knowledge can inspire nature-based climate solutions, sustainable land management, and community resilience.
From the millenary carob trees of Sicily to the ancient olive groves of Umbria and the stone pines of the Tyrrhenian coast, these emblematic species symbolise the intertwined history of people, land, and culture. Entangled Destiny demonstrates how traditional knowledge and Mediterranean heritage can inspire resilient, nature-based climate solutions that bridge ecological, cultural, and community priorities.
