As the world grapples with the urgency of climate change, the Mediterranean region finds itself at a critical juncture, where both challenges and opportunities converge. The Mediterranean region is at a global crossroads, being one of the most climate vulnerable regions, while facing urgent security challenges. This event aims to mobilize collective action towards achieving an ambitious target of 1 TW of renewable energy capacity in the Mediterranean by 2030. This goal is essential for enhancing energy security, fostering sustainable economic development, and forging meaningful partnerships between the Global North and Global South.
Central to the promotion of the target is the effective implementation of COP28 target to triple total renewables deployment by 2030 at the global level, placing the Mediterranean region and countries within as the first movers of the Dubai Consensus, anchoring these objectives in the next Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) submission cycle, while building altogether the political, economic and social conditions to address energy security frameworks, clean and affordable energy for all, create jobs across diverse economies and foster the creation of long term green industrial planning.
This event will highlight the importance of new models of climate and energy diplomacy, showcasing pioneering clean energy partnerships that leverage on a coalition of stakeholders, including international organizations, civil society groups, financial actors and private sector involvement to foster momentum for meaningful action.
