UfM Renewable Energy Experts at the General Assembly of IRENA
Barcelona-Experts from all over the world are meeting today in Abu Dhabi to give advice and insights on how IRENA can best deliver its promise and guide any enhancement of the proposed Medium-term Strategic Framework for 2012-2015.
Upon the invitation of IRENA, Ambassador Sotiris Varouxakisthe Deputy Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) delivered a speech at the two ministerial roundtables highlighting the importance of building a shared medium term roadmap allowing the identification of the necessary steps to develop renewable energy and energy efficiency (REEE), to identify and support pilot projects and to propose innovative financial tools.
Ambassador Varouxakis emphasized on the need for a regional approach combining developed and developing countries, giving the example of the Mediterranean Solar Plan (MSP), a popular initiative developed by the UfM that involves countries from both banks of the Mediterranean for the production and transmission of renewable energy.
On the margins of the assembly, Mr. Varouxakis was met with the General Director of IRENA, the discussion focused on the future collaborations on major renewable energy projects. He also held strategic meetings with experts, companies and financial institutions to promote concrete energy-related projects for the Mediterranean.
