J.E. Barcelona
The Union for the Mediterranean member states have approved the completion of the central section of the Maghreb motorway axis. They reached the agreement during their last meeting held mid-February in Brussels. The infrastructure project of 3.447 kilometers long highway connects Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. In the words of Ambassador and Deputy Secretary General for Transport and Urban Development of the Secretariat of the UfM, Yigit Alpogan, “the project is essential to develop the goods and passenger traffic connection between the countries involved.”
The main objective of the project is to finalize the connections between the central section in order to provide the Agadir motorway in Morocco and the Ras Jedir in Tunisia, with a continuous corridor. The sum of the two sections adds to a total of 102 kilometers and is estimated in 666 million Euros. At present, 97% of the infrastructure has been completed or will be completed this year. Consequently, the full connection of the three countries is nearer every day.
