Informal UfM high-level Conference on Climate Change
Skhirat, 6-7 May 2015
Hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco; the Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, Fathallah Sijilmassi, will participate at the Informal UfM high-level conference on climate change that will be held in Skhirat, Morocco, on 7 May. The event will gather Ministers and high-level representatives of UfM Members and the European Commissioner in charge of Climate Action and Energy, Miguel Arias Cañete. This high-level conference will be preceded by the second meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean Climate Change Expert Group (UfMCCEG) that will take place on 6-7 May. Both UfM gatherings will happen in the framework of the Mediterranean Climate Week that will bring together, from 4 to 7 May, several climate change related events.
The high-level conference will be the opportunity to give enhanced visibility to the work that is being carried out in the field of climate change within the framework of the Union for the Mediterranean. Taking into account that the UNFCCC COP 21 to be held in Paris is approaching and also that Morocco will host the COP 22 next year, the Minister for Sustainable Development of France, Ségolène Royal, and the Minister of Environment of Morocco, Hakima El Haite, will present the road towards a new global agreement on climate change and its future implementation.
The second UfMCCEG meeting will gather UfM national focal points as well as representatives from stakeholders, civil society and private sector. It will focus mainly on climate change mitigation aspects whereas the third UfMCCEG meeting (foreseen for the second half of 2015) will put more emphasis on adaptation elements. A UfM NAMA (Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions) Initiative for the Mediterranean region will be also presented. Enhancing scientific knowledge of climate change in the Euro-Mediterranean region and a climate finance round table will be also in the agenda of the meeting.
