Spanish Culture Minister visits the UfM headquarters in Barcelona
The discussion centred around the Mediterranean region’s current affairs and UfM initiatives such as the Day of the Mediterranean and the Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue. Both parties emphasised the importance of culture and intercultural dialogue in promoting a positive and cohesive agenda across the region, and the strengthening of organisations such as the Anna Lindh Foundation.
Barcelona, 15 February 2024. UfM Secretary General, Nasser Kamel, and the Spanish Minister of Culture, Ernest Urtasun, discussed the pivotal role of culture and intercultural dialogue in bridging the Mediterranean’s diverse divides. They highlighted key UfM initiatives designed to enhance intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding, notably the Day of the Mediterranean and the Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue, coordinated jointly with the Anna Lindh Foundation for the Dialogue Between Cultures.
Minister Ernest Urtasun expressed Spain’s support for these initiatives, emphasising the country’s commitment to placing culture as a central element of regional cooperation. He welcomed the Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue initiative and reaffirmed his shared vision for fostering a more integrated and harmonious Mediterranean region through intercultural dialogue and cultural cooperation.
The Union for the Mediterranean and the Anna Lindh Foundation recently announced the first two Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue for the year 2025: Tirana and Alexandria. Additionally, the call for applications for the 2026 edition is now open, inviting cities from UfM member states to showcase their commitment to their shared Euro-Mediterranean heritage and identity.
The meeting between UfM SG Kamel and Minister Urtasun is a testament to the growing recognition of culture’s crucial role in addressing regional challenges and building a future grounded in mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation.
