The 7th Conference of Transport Ministers of the Western Mediterranean Countries (5+5 GTMO) congratulated the UfMS for the recently labeled project “Completion of the Central Section of the Trans-Maghreb Motorway Axis”
In his intervention, Ambassador Alpogan, Deputy Secretary General for Transport and Urban Development discussed the work the UfM, outlining the current areas of cooperation and more precisely, the common projects between the UfM and the 5+5 GTMO. He also expressed his willingness to visit Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria to discuss the technicalities of two UfM labeled transport projects, namely the “Completion of the Central Section of the Trans-Maghreb Motorway Axis” and “LOGISMEDTA”, as well as inform about the projects “Southern Mediterranean Maritime Highway Sues-Gibraltar”, “Maghreb Railway Axis” and “Completion of VTS/VTMIS systems” which are currently under evaluation.
The ministers and the representatives of the international organizations highlighted the importance and benefits of the cooperation between the UfM and the 5+5 GTMO, and referred to the recently labeled “Completion of the Central Section of the Trans-Maghreb Motorway Axis” as an important step for the integration of the Maghreb region.
During the conclusion of the meeting, the UfMS was congratulated for the labeling of the GTMO 5+5 project which is to complete the central section of the trans-Maghreb motorway axis, and the decision was also taken to present the trans-Maghreb rail axis project and the VTS/VTMIS network project to the UfM for labeling. It was also agreed to collaborate in the LOGISMED project and the work initiated by the UfMS regarding maritime safety, the motorways of the sea and land motorways was acknowledged.
It is worthwhile mentioning that Algeria who’s Minister of Transport chaired the conference has taken presidency (2012-2014) of the group after Italy (2009-2012).
