UfM participation in the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly
16-21 September 2023, New York – UfM Secretary-General Nasser Kamel attended the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, where he highlighted the Union for the Mediterranean’s initiatives and solidified its partnerships with key UN institutions and agencies, including the UNDP. He also held meetings with several Foreign Affairs Ministers from Member States.
The theme of the general debate this year was “Rebuilding trust and reigniting global solidarity: Accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress, and sustainability for all.” António Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, inaugurated the General Assembly by warning that the world is “becoming unhinged” and emphasized the United Nations’ core purpose, which is to address global crises during times of “maximum danger and minimum agreement.”
On the sidelines of this significant event, the Secretary General took the opportunity to meet with ten Foreign Affairs Ministers from UfM Member States, as well as engaging in discussions with high-level representatives of international organizations and partner institutions.
The Secretary General was also invited to the 2023 Fashion for Development Event whose programs focus on promoting responsible lifestyle practices, offering solutions to environmental issues, advance economic and social development activities as well as preserve culture and empower women. The F4D is a private sector global platform founded January 2011 in cooperation with the Office of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon to support the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and “Every Woman, Every Child”.
