UfM participates at the 9th Ministerial meeting of CIHEAM
Barcelona, 2nd October. The Ministers of Agriculture of the 13 member states of the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (CIHEAM) met in La Valetta (Malta) last 27th September to discuss “food security and food price volatility in the Mediterranean region”. Rafiq Husseini, Deputy Secretary General to the Environment and Water division of the UfM, delivered a speech on behalf of the Secretariat congratulating CIHEAM for its 50th anniversary and outlining the role of UfM, in general, and in the Water sector in particular.
The Ministers recommended in their Final Declaration that the UfM Secretariat supports “the projects concerning food security considering its vocation to promote Euro-Mediterranean multilateral actions, identifying initiatives in this sector which affects the daily lives of the population and constitutes an area for solidarity”. They acknowledged that the topics of food security and the struggle against price volatility not only deserve attention at all times but also require coordinated answers at a political, commercial and logistical levels which a Euro-Mediterranean multilateral context can facilitate.
