Launch of Forestry and Land Restoration project within the 6th Med Forest Week
1-5 April 2019, Lebanon. The UfM side-event to the Sixth Mediterranean Forest Week will take place in Lebanon on 1-5 April 2019 and will be the opportunity to launch the“Scaling up forest and landscape restoration in order to restore biodiversity and promote joint mitigation and adaptation approaches in the Mediterranean”, labelled by the UfM. This FAO promoted, UfM labelled and IKI financed project will be kicked off next 1st April during the 6th Mediterranean Forest Week in Brummana, Lebanon (Grand Hills Hotel), taking place between the 1st and the 4th of April 2019.
The side event aims to present specifically the Mediterranean component of the project, extend the activities to those countries that express interest to join, as well as to launch the regional technical assistance facility for the preparation of upscaling projects on forest and landscape restoration to achieve the National Determined Contributions in the context of the Paris Agreement.
The project aims at strengthening regional and national capacity for the implementation of large scale forest and landscape restoration (FLR) programmes in the Mediterranean region, as a key option to achieve the National Determined Contributions (NDCs) that governments have submitted in the context of the Paris Agreement. The implementation of these FLR programmes will contribute to restoration of ecosystems, adaptation to climate change and preservation of biodiversity while improving livelihoods, especially in rural areas.
