As we celebrate the UN World Water Day and the international Year of Water Cooperation, the stakes of more sustainable and more accessible water management around the Mediterranean remain high: according to recent figures, the Mediterranean is currently lagging behind by 38% to achieve the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) of bringing safe water to all.

This one-year technical assistance will support the Palestinian Water Authority in the preparatory work, additional studies and the design for the plant.

More than one hundred experts from 20 Euro-Mediterranean countries met at the headquarters of the Union for the Mediterranean to discuss the Draft of the Master Plan, which plans the deployment of an additional 20 GW of renewable energy capacities by 2020 as well as the large development of energy efficiency.

The project is about to formally take off with the aim to address the challenging governance-financing nexus with regard to the Mediterranean water sector. The financial contribution of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) accounts for about 40% of the project and will finance primarily the project’s regional component, consisting of regional consultation meetings and dialogue events as well as the regional coordination, administration and communication of the project.

During a working meeting held at the UfM premises, both institutions defined concrete synergies and ways to advance complementary activities on environmental and water issues and on Energy and the Mediterranean Solar Plan.

UfM Secretary General Sijilmassi took part in a High-level Conference on civil protection cooperation in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
