22-23 June 2023 (TBC), Rabat. An International Workshop on the Global Observatory on Non-conventional Water Resources and Associated Renewable Energies will be held in Rabat with the collaboration of IME-Institut Méditerranéen de l’Eau and ONEE, the Moroccan National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water. This event to which the Union for the Mediterranean will be contributing will mark the start of a two-year project in the Mediterranean and Sahel, which have been identified as pilot areas with volunteering countries and international organizations.
During the 4th Mediterranean Forum held jointly by the UfM, the Maltese Energy and Water Agency and IME in Malta in December 2021, a feasibility study was launched for setting an International Observatory of Non-Conventional Water Resources and Associated Renewable Energies, in a first pilot area located within the Mediterranean-Sahel Region, before its extension to the world level. This Observatory is designed to monitor the use of non-conventional water resources and the renewable energies dedicated to them.
The establishment and development of the International Observatory on Non-conventional Water Resources and associated Renewable Energies can provide experience, practical case studies technologies and access to finance. This observatory is seen as a stepping-stone to harmonizing standards, approaches, technologies and costs across the basin. This observatory does not aim to compete with existing institutions in the basin but aims to complement their work by bringing research and application experiences to a larger audience.
