UfM Participation at COP24
3-14 December 2018, Katowice, Poland. The Union for the Mediterranean is an observer to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and participates at UNFCCC meetings with the objective of bringing the Mediterranean Climate Agenda to international fora.
The Mediterranean region has been identified as one of the main climate change hotspots in the world due to, interalia, water scarcity, desertification, concentration of economic activities and population in coastal areas, and the reliance on climate-sensitive agriculture. As an intergovernmental organization wholly dedicated to the Euro‑Mediterranean region, the Union for the Mediterranean observes first-hand the adverse effects of climate change where the rise of temperature by 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels, the lower limit not to be surpassed as agreed through the Paris Agreement, is already being exceeded, according to the last IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 °C (http://www.ipcc.ch/).
The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean will participate at COP24 with three side events. On Wednesday 12 December, the updated UfM Climate Finance Study will be presented during the side event “Enhancing climate access in the Mediterranean region – Presentation of the UfM Climate Finance Study”, at the Turkish Pavilion. The UfM Climate Finance Study provides a clear overview of the funding flows related to climate finance in the Mediterranean region and the challenges related to their accessibility. On Thursday 13 December, the first scientific report about the impact of climate change in the Mediterranean region will be presented by MedECC (“Impacts of the climate and environment changes in the Mediterranean: presentation of the 1st Draft Assessment Report – Science-Policy Interface”) at the Moroccan Pavilion. On Friday 14 December, the Secretariat of the UfM will co‑organise with the Mediterranean Youth Climate Network (https://www.facebook.com/MYCNetwork/) a side event dedicated to youth engagement titled “Tapping the potential of the Mediterranean youth in climate action”, at the EU Pavilion.
