4-8 June 2025 (dates TBC), Banc d’Arguin National Park (PNBA) in Iwik (Mauritania). In the framework of the UfM cooperation with the FAO, and in cooperation with the Banc d’Arguin National Park (PNBA), the Training Workshop “GIAHS Application Preparation for Authors and Publishers”, will be held at the Banc d’Arguin National Park (PNBA) in Iwik (Mauritania), from 6 to 8 June 2025 (dates TBC).
The objective of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) programme is to identify, recognise and promote the dynamic conservation of these agricultural systems through their associated landscapes, agricultural biodiversity, knowledge systems and culture.
This is of critical importance in terms of food security, biodiversity and sustainable management of natural resources, particularly in the context of climate change and rural exodus. Therefore, the need of creating a sustainable dialogue of sharing experiences and good practices on agricultural heritage systems between the two shores of the Mediterranean is ever-more pressing.
In this context, the Workshop “Mediterranean Encounters on Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS): Sharing Good Practices and Lessons Learned” held in Alicante (Spain) on 2-4 October 2024, aimed at strengthening Euro-Mediterranean cooperation around GIAHS. Concretely, by establishing a GIAHS Mediterranean Network, to share experiences and lessons learned from already recognized GIAHS sites, and present potential GIAHS sites in the region.
Several follow-up activities for 2025 were identified, including a technical assistance to support new candidatures of oasis from Maghreb countries to be designated as GIAHS, and a Conference on Oasis Systems in Tozeur (Tunisia), to be organised in cooperation with UNESCO.
