“Promoting the woman’s role in the Mediterranean” a topic discussed at the European Parliament
The session was opened by the President of the S&D Group, Martin Schulz; other panel members included leaders from women movements from UfM country members such as; iAlgeria, Turkey, Egypt and Jordan. The Moroccan Minister for Social Development, Family and Solidarity, H.E. Dr. Nouzha Skalli, also addressed the Round Table.
The roundtable aimed at raising awareness, promoting and implementing the commitments made by the Euro-Med countries, in the framework of action on strengthening the role of women in society, based on the Marrakech Ministerial Conference on Women (November 2009). It dealt with a number strategic axes – inter alia, women in the economy and enterprise, women in technology and their access to education, as well as analyzing initiatives, programmes, and financial instruments that could be used to enhance the role of women in decision-making positions.
In brief, participants outlined action that had been taken over the recent years with the aim of promoting and strengthening the role of women within their respective countries. Speakers also spoke about the need to secure collective action in an effort to effectively and visibly promote and empower women within the region.
