Stockholm, 28th August 2012. Revolve Magazine has won a WASH Media Award for ‘Water Around the Mediterranean’, a special report published in February 2012 with support from the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM).
The 96-page report covers eight key themes and includes contributions by top decision-makers, young environmental reporters and leading water experts. A broad selection of feature articles, interviews and opinion pieces are presented together with photo essays and fact sheets that summarize the pivotal issues surrounding water management in the Mediterranean region.
« ‘Water Around the Mediterranean’ is a truly unique report,” comments Rafiq Husseini, Deputy Secretary General for the Environment & Water Division of the UfM. “The amalgamation of old and new wisdom from the shores of this historic sea revitalizes our quest to find innovative solutions for the efficient utilization of fresh water – one of the most precious commodities throughout the region.
The report’s editor Francesca de Châtel and Revolve’s founding editor Stuart Reigeluth plan to build on the report to launch the ‘Mediterranean Water Challenge’ in 2013 as an international platform to raise awareness and encourage exchange about water issues in the region.
The platform will target young professionals, students, journalists and water experts from around the sea and beyond. “We want to provide a new generation of decision-makers, scientists and reporters with the knowledge and skills to communicate key aspects of the regional water crisis more effectively,” explains de Châtel.
Only 3% of global freshwater resources flow through the Mediterranean region, which is home to more than half of the world’s ‘water poor’ population. The Mediterranean Water Challenge will address the growing water crisis in the region through articles, reports, videos, exhibitions and workshops.
The WASH Media Awards Jury selected Revolve’s ‘Water Around the Mediterranean’ report as one of six winning submissions from over 150 entries from 50 countries.
