21-22 May 2024. Bali, Indonesia. Following the 5th edition of the Mediterranean Water Forum, co-organised by the Union for the Mediterranean, the Institut Méditerranéen de l’Eau, and the World Water Council, the UfM Secretariat will actively participate in the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, to bring the unified Mediterranean voices on water to the global stage.
In addition to UfM interventions foreseen in several panels, the UfM Secretariat will also co-organise, together with the Mediterranean Water Institute (IME), the following sessions:
The Mediterranean Region is a unique hub to develop and implement solutions based on the WEFE Nexus approach due to its singularities and historical background. Additional efforts should
be placed in upscaling pilot projects and in overcoming existing obstacles (technological, regulatory, cultural, financial, etc.). Integrating the WEFE Nexus into sectoral planning and policies opens the possibility of an inclusive and participatory process with broad social involvement to create a more integrated vision aligned with the expectations and necessities of a wider part of the society.
In recent years, sovereign wealth funds and major financial institutions have been working to incorporate corporate water risks into their valuation models and investment decisions. Flooding, drought, depletion of aquifers or water quality problems can lead to plant closures (beverage companies) or stifled supply chains (agribusiness). Water use rights will become increasingly restrictive. Water financing must cover all the water needs of humans, food production and nature and its biodiversity.
This High-Level Panel will be an important step in catalysing a global exchange of knowledge. In the session, ministries and countries representatives from the Mediterranean and other regions will engage a dialogue on the opportunity to advance non-conventional water resources and associated renewable energies and strengthen collaboration. The discussion will include an explanation about a platform known as an “Observatory”, a knowledge platform developed by the Mediterranean Water Institute on behalf of the World Water Council.
