3-4 December – Brussels. The workshop seeks to raise awareness on the importance of forest genetic resources (FGR) in enhancing the adaptive capacity and resilience of Mediterranean forests to climate change. It will emphasize the necessity of developing national and cross-country conservation strategies for FGR. The workshop will highlight existing EU strategies addressing climate change impacts on forests, such as the European Green Deal, the EU Adaptation Strategy, and the EU Forest Strategy for 2030, as well as the role of FGR in achieving long-term forest resilience. Additionally, it aims to initiate the creation of a Mediterranean strategy for FGR conservation, engaging Mediterranean countries and relevant international stakeholders.
During the workshop, Member State experts will share their knowledge on EU policies and best practices for forest resilience and FGR conservation, including the European Green Deal, EU Adaptation Strategy, EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, and New EU Forest Strategy for 2030. The workshop will also highlight the importance of forest genetic diversity for ecosystem resilience, showcasing successful European experiences like the European Forest Genetic Resources Programme (EUFORGEN).
The workshop will target representatives from ministries responsible for forest and landscape conservation. Participants will include policy makers and scientific experts from Mediterranean countries and EU Member States, who will learn about EU legislation and share their own national perspectives on FGR conservation. The event aims to foster collaboration and discussions on developing a regional strategy for the management and conservation of FGR, integrating local priorities and best practices.
