UfM to join pioneering Euro-Mediterranean agroecology congress
9 to 12 June 2025, Sicily. The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) has announced its support for the upcoming 1st Mediterranean Agroecology Congress (AEMED), scheduled to take place from 9 to 12 June 2025, in Agrigento, Sicily, Italy’s 2025 Capital of Culture. The event will gather scientists, policymakers, practitioners, farmers, and civil society representatives from across the Mediterranean and beyond to discuss agroecology as a holistic response to contemporary environmental and societal challenges.
“Agroecology is a solution: it simultaneously faces the causes and challenges of the mitigation and adaptation to the climate crisis and all the related effects on human beings and the ecosystem. But it cannot be just a local strategy, as the effects of the unregulated climate progress in the Mediterranean: a concrete regional choice to reactivate the ecosystem services, also for our safety, becomes fundamental. Therefore, the UfM unreservedly supports this first international meeting”, stated Grammenos Mastrojeni, Senior Deputy Secretary General of the UfM.
The congress, organized by Agroecology Sicily Coordination in collaboration with the Italian Association of Agroecology (AIDA) and the Italian Association of Agroforestry (AIAF), aims to facilitate dialogue and establish strategic collaborations at both Mediterranean and European levels. The event is further enriched by its connection with the Agroecology Europe Forum set for October 2025 in Malmö.
“This will undoubtedly be a scientific event, but also an interaction between science, practice and movement. Therefore, farmers, citizens’ movements and scientists will participate in a new connection. Which connection? The hyper-connected network of Nature teaches it to us. A network that gives us codes to understand in what ways the society of the future will be different. A future where the real concept of sustainability will be really meaningful in the so-called integral ecology”, stated during the presentation of the event, Guido Bissanti, President of the Agroecology Coordination of Sicily
Key topics to be discussed include resilient agricultural systems, agroecological innovation, climate change strategies, sustainable food systems, and social equity in agriculture. A unique aspect of the congress will be field visits to local farms on 11 June, enabling direct exchange and practical insights into agroecological techniques.
