Third meeting of Civil Protection Directors-General of the Member States of the UfM
11 and 12 February 2019, Barcelona. The 3rd meeting of the Directors-General of Civil Protection of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Member States will take place on 11 and 12 of February 2019 at the UfM premises in Barcelona, 9 years after the last meeting took place. Opening speeches will be delivered by Christos Stylianides, European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Yousef Bataineh, Ambassador of Jordan to Belgium, Luxembourg, the European Union, NATO, and Nasser Kamel, the Secretary General of the UfM.
The meeting, co-organised by the UfM and the EU, seeks to facilitate thematic discussions focusing on common humanitarian aid and crisis management challenges. The frequency and intensity of disasters has increased in the last decade, exerting considerable pressure on national authorities. Disasters are increasingly resulting in high casualties in terms of human, economic and environmental losses over the globe, and the Mediterranean is no exception. Information sharing and a coordinated/common approach to disaster risk management has proven to be more effective and efficient in this new environment.
Cooperation between UfM Members States is therefore a priority in the field of Civil Protection, since disasters ‘know no borders’ and the challenges and risks faced are often shared.
