The project is about to formally take off with the aim to address the challenging governance-financing nexus with regard to the Mediterranean water sector. The financial contribution of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) accounts for about 40% of the project and will finance primarily the project’s regional component, consisting of regional consultation meetings and dialogue events as well as the regional coordination, administration and communication of the project.

During a working meeting held at the UfM premises, both institutions defined concrete synergies and ways to advance complementary activities on environmental and water issues and on Energy and the Mediterranean Solar Plan.

This potential project, which responds to the need for reliable shared data and free flow of information, is a necessary basic tool for the integrated management and planning of Mediterranean water resources at a national or international level.

The UfM Secretariat, the Palestinian Water Authority and the Government of Turkey held talks on the technical and financial aspects of this strategic project which will require 310 Million euros investment. Turkey expressed its strong interest to support the project and a financial commitment will be discussed at the Prime Minister level in the coming weeks.

The UfM Environment and Water Division attended the 9th Ministerial meeting of the CIHEAM, where food security challenges were discussed. The Final Declaration of the Ministers recommends that the UfM supports projects concerning food security.

The Report draws attention to some of the common enemies in the Mediterranean region, namely water scarcity, climate change and pollution, which in combination greatly constrain human existence.

The Palestinian Water Authority and the UfM are working together to raise the 310 Million euros necessary investment. Arab countries, coordinated by the Islamic Development Bank, committed to provide half of the necessary funds as a match to European financial commitment. 10 Million euros were already pledged by France during the 6th World Water Forum in Marseille.

The establishment of a Euro-Mediterranean University in Morocco, an employability training program addressed at Southern Mediterranean disadvantaged women, and a plan for overcoming governance challenges to the mobilisation of financing for the Mediterranean water sector are the three new projects recently labelled by the UfM.
