Designated Secretary General Kamel hosts his first UfM Senior Officials meeting in Barcelona

Barcelona, 17 July 2018. The Senior Officials of the Union for the Mediterranean held their third meeting of 2018 this afternoon at the UfM Secretariat in Barcelona. This meeting was the first Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) hosted by Nasser Kamel since his appointment as Secretary General General of the Union for the Mediterranean, and was the occasion for him to present the main priorities .

The designated Secretary General underlined the importance of the upcoming months for the Union for the Mediterranean, as it celebrates its 10th anniversary, and called for the continued engagement of its Member States to strengthen regional cooperation and dialogue in the Mediterranean and to promote an inclusive human and sustainable development in the region. “A better future is possible for the Euro-Mediterranean region and we all assume our responsibility towards this end, as the tides of our sea return forever”, he added.

The meeting  also focused on the  preparations of the 3rd UfM Regional Forum, to take place on 8 October 2018 in Barcelona, that will gather the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the UfM Member States under the title “10 years of the Union for the Mediterranean: building together the future of regional cooperation”. Following the first two successful editions of this Forum, the third edition will be the perfect setting to take stock of the progress achieved so far and to reflect the shared political will of the 43 Member States to continue supporting the UfM in its efforts to promote regional integration and cooperation.
