From research to business: Turning knowledge into jobs, innovation, and growth

October 13–15, 2025, Malta. Across the Mediterranean, researchers are developing solutions with the power to transform lives. Yet, the path from scientific discovery to societal impact remains fragmented. This 13-15 October, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) will convene a high-level conference to change that narrative, spotlighting the people, projects, and partnerships driving research commercialisation forward.
“From research to business: Turning knowledge into jobs, innovation and growth” will take place in Malta on October 13–15, 2025, at the margin of the UfM Conference on Employment and Labour, and as part of the lead-up to the next UfM Ministerial gathering on Research and Innovation in 2026. The event brings together key actors from across the Euro-Mediterranean region to strengthen the role of research valorisation in employment, sustainable development, and regional competitiveness. It is organized in partnership with Xjenza Malta.
This event aims to accelerate the translation of academic research into tangible economic and societal impact, addressing structural barriers that limit innovation uptake and job creation in the Mediterranean region. Building on previous UfM dialogues and initiatives such as PRIMA and CIHEAM, the event will bring together academic entrepreneurs, university innovation leaders, policymakers, and ecosystem developers actively engaged in research valorisation.
Participants will engage in strategic high-level discussions, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities designed to foster cross-sector partnerships, strengthen regional innovation ecosystems, and promote sustainable economic development. Particular focus will be placed on exploring the path from research to business in the sectors of health, climate change, and renewable energy.
The programme begins with a high-level policy segment on October 13, followed by a two-day workshop on October 14–15. The workshop is designed for a curated group of ecosystem builders and innovation professionals who are actively shaping research commercialisation, and aims to equip them with practical insights for developing more connected and innovation-ready ecosystems.
