23-24 September 2026, Cairo – The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), in partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), UN Women and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), will organize the 2nd Regional Workshop of its Climate, Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Network . The workshop will take place under the umbrella of the 2026 meeting of the ESCWA Subcommittee on Gender Equality and the Sustainable Development Goals on Women, Peace and Security and Climate Change in the Arab Region: Operationalizing Policy Coherence for the Gender-Climate-Conflict Nexus, on 23-24 September 2026 in Cairo, Egypt.
Climate change, conflict and gender inequality are increasingly interconnected challenges across the Arab region. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by climate-related disasters, displacement, insecurity and loss of livelihoods, while often having limited participation in decision-making processes related to climate action and peacebuilding.
The workshop will bring together representatives of national women’s machineries, ministries of environment, civil society organizations, women-led organizations, and regional and international partners from across the Arab region. The event aims to strengthen the capacity of national stakeholders to address the links between gender, climate change and conflict, and to promote greater coherence between Women, Peace and Security (WPS) National Action Plans, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) strategies. Discussions will focus on the gendered impacts of climate change and conflict, strengthening institutional capacities, enhancing policy coordination, and advancing practical tools and approaches to support gender-responsive climate action, peacebuilding and sustainable development.
