UfM Secretariat promotes coordinated management of water, land and natural resources
Barcelona, 1 October, 2013. Along with partners Plan Bleu and EMWIS, the UfM Secretariat is hosting a workshop with regional and international partners and organizations at its headquarters in Barcelona on 30 September and 1 October, 2013. The aim of the workshop is to discuss and harmonize the indicators used by countries as well as by regional institutions for following up Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) policies and actions.
With a clear need to better streamline and coordinate processes of development and information sharing, the outcomes of the meeting will contribute to a regional project on environmental information which is currently being studied by the UfM Secretariat along with partners EMWIS, IME, COFWS, EEA and UNEP/MAP and which will be submitted to the member countries of the Union for the Mediterranean.
Recognized by the Global Water Partnership as ‘a process which promotes the coordinated development and management of water, land and related resources, in order to maximize the resultant economic and social welfare in an equitable manner without compromising the sustainability of vital ecosystems’, IWRM is in line with the mandate in the field of information given to the UfM by the Ministerial conference on water of the Union of the Mediterranean, held in December 2008.
