UN 2023 Water Conference: UfM-led side event ‘Water Finance in the Mediterranean’

23 March 2023, New York. In the framework of the upcoming UN 2023 Water Conference and as part of the official programme of the conference, the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and partners will be hosting a side-event, the ‘Water Finance in the Mediterranean: Accelerating the implementation of SDG 6 by enhancing the financial sustainability of water management’.
The institutions partnering with the Union for the Mediterranean in this side-event are the European Commission, the Ministry of Water and Irrigation of Jordan, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Türkiye, the Ministry of Equipment and Water of Morocco, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
The focus of the side-event will be water investment and financing in the Mediterranean. It will showcase the tools developed in the framework of the UfM (such as the UfM Financial Strategy for Water, National Workshops, Regional Conferences, and the recent Cairo Action Agenda) as well as the progress made by individual countries to enhance the financial sustainability of the water sector, including through better investment policies and planning. It will also highlight challenges faced and ambitions for the period to 2030.
The UfM Deputy Secretary General in charge of Water, Environment and Blue Economy, Almotaz Abadi, declares in view of this event that ‘achieving national and global water goals requires ensuring the financial sustainability of water management. The UfM and its partners are bringing the voice of the Mediterranean to the UN 2023 Water Conference to share the progress and challenges of our region in this critical area’.
The side-event will be in-person and it will take place in the UN Headquarters of New York City on March 23rd, from 15:30 to 16:45 hours (GMT-5), in Conference Room 6.
