2021 Regional Progress Report on Gender Equality – UfM Regional Dialogue on Women Empowerment in the Euro-Mediterranean region
The Intergovernmental Monitoring Mechanism on Gender Equality for the UfM region released its first report in March 2022, sharing the latest information on women’s economic participation, entrepreneurship and leadership in the Euro-Mediterranean region. This report benefited from the commitment and recommendations of the UfM Member States and other stakeholders engaged in the progress.
Gender Equality Index 2022: The COVID-19 pandemic and care,

The Gender Equality Index is a tool to measure the progress of gender equality in the EU, developed by EIGE. It gives more visibility to areas that need improvement and ultimately supports policy makers to design more effective gender equality measures.
The Index allows Member States to easily monitor and compare gender equality progress across various groups of women and men in the EU over time and to understand where improvements are most needed. The 2022 Index has a thematic focus on care in the pandemic. It explores the division of informal childcare, long-term care and housework between women and men.

Food systems transformation – Processes and pathways in the Mediterranean,

As part of the global Food Systems Summit process, countries and stakeholders across the Mediterranean convened several Summit Dialogues, which allowed to reflect on the Summit’s objectives, explore the challenges faced in Mediterranean food systems, and exchange about strategic pathways to enable a sustainable transition.
FAO, CIHEAM and UfM launched an initiative to engage with countries and stakeholders in the Mediterranean, providing a forum for dialogue and multi-stakeholder exchange, dedicated support for the co-creation of flagship projects and investment proposals, opportunities for regional cooperation on data sharing, science diplomacy and innovation.

This is an executive brief that was developed based on the outcomes of the two SFS-MED Dialogues held in April and June 2021 in the framework of the preparatory process of the UN Food Systems Summit. This document includes key messages and highlights of the two virtual meetings, and its first version was shared with Member State Dialogues Convenors from Mediterranean countries to support the preparation of their participation and their statements in the the upcoming UN Food Systems Summit event in September 2021. This revised version of the document is intended to replace the previous and will also be shared with the participants in the two SFS-MED Dialogues.

This study offers a preliminary overview of the measures undertaken across the EU to support victims of violence during the Covid-19 outbreak, identifies examples of promising practices and provides initial recommendations for the EU and Member States on how to better support victims during the pandemic, as well as in other potential crises.
Launching Conference The 2021 Regional Index on Violence against Women and Girls,
The Regional Civil Society Observatory (RCSO)
The RCSO has developed different tools to follow up the implementation of the UfM Ministerial Declaration, particularly the 2020 Regional Index on VAWG and on the WPSA. The conference aimed to launch the 2021 Regional Index on VAWG and discuss the main results, scope and use of the findings on the national and regional policy levels. The conference also aimed to provide policy recommendations on combating VAWG.
Dublin Declaration on the Prevention of Domestic, Sexual and Gender-Based Violence,

Thirty-eight Council of Europe member states have committed to a “Dublin Declaration” outlining a series of steps to promote gender equality in order to help prevent domestic, sexual and gender-based violence. It is inspired by the Council of Europe’s Istanbul Convention on violence against women, and expert findings on the implementation of the convention so far.
Gender-Sensitive Police Response in Addressing Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) in the Arab States,

The policy paper provides an overview of the police response to Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) in the Arab States region including in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The paper then presents UN Women and UNODC’s initiative on Gender Sensitive Policing, for further engagement of the police on the issue of VAWG in the region.
Review of good practices for remote service delivery to survivors of violence in the Arab States region, UN Women Arab States
This desk review summarises global and regional trends and best practices and techniques for reaching out remotely to women and girls who experience violence, including during lockdowns and to survivors of online violence. It is based on a rapid desk review of the global and regional literature, with a particular focus on Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, State of Palestine, Tunisia and Yemen.
Women and peace and security Report of the Secretary-General (S/2022/740),

The Secretary-General’s annual report on WPS says that the world is currently “experiencing a reversal of generational gains in women’s rights while violent conflicts, military expenditures, military coups, displacements and hunger continue to increase”. The focus of this year’s report is on “turning the unconditional defence of women’s rights into one of the most visible markers” of the UN’s peace and security work, and in particular the protection of women’s human rights defenders (WHRDs).
