Launch of the Euro-Mediterranean Institute of Technology (INSA Euro-Méditerranée) as part of the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fez (UEMF).

Higher Education & Research

Barcelone, 30 September 2014. The Euro-Mediterranean University of Fez (UEMF), a flagship project to strengthen cooperation in the Euro-Mediterranean region, was accredited with the UfM label in June 2012 and since 22 September has been home to the first Euro-Mediterranean establishment for engineer training. The diplomas awarded to these engineers will be recognised by the Moroccan government, the French government and the European network of engineering schools, which already includes six participating countries (Morocco, Tunisia, Spain, Portugal, Italy and France). The professors/researchers themselves come from diverse backgrounds, and in particular from Morocco, France and from the consortium of partner universities, which includes institutions in Spain (Barcelona, Madrid, Seville), Italy (Milan, Turin) and Portugal.

The signing of the agreement between the National Institutes of Applied Sciences (Instituts Nationaux des Sciences Appliquées, INSA) and the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fez established one of the fundamental dimensions of the tenor of the Euro-Mediterranean University of Fez, laying the foundations of an innovative university; a hub for a new generation of high-potential young professionals in the Mediterranean.

Under the Honorary Presidency of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this public interest institution will welcome its first students this academic year before eventually receiving up to 6,000 students. “At first, this new project will include six participating countries (Morocco, Tunisia, Spain, Portugal, Italy and France), but this is only a starting point. Tomorrow, there will be students from Europe and the Maghreb as well as from Africa,” stated Mr Lahcen Daoudi, the Moroccan Minister of Higher Education.

The Euro-Mediterranean University of Fez is organised into two divisions: an engineering and architecture division, which now hosts the INSA Euro-Méditerranée (launched on 22 September), and a humanities and social sciences division. It will provide training courses over a five-year period, with at least one and a half of these years taking place outside of Morocco. Training will focus on renewable energy, aeronautics and automotive, spatial planning, languages, fishery resources, the history of Euro-Mediterranean civilizations, and diplomacy as well as the fields of economics and the econometrics of the integrated Euro-Mediterranean region. The first two accredited Master’s degree programmes in the fields of Environmental Engineering and Renewable Energies will begin in October 2014.

The launch ceremony of the Euro-Mediterranean Institute of Technology (INSA Euro-Méditerranée) was held in the Prefecture of Fez. It was attended by Mr Lahcen Daoudi, the Moroccan Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Executive Training; Ms Geneviève Fioraso, the French Secretary of State for Higher Education; the Portuguese Secretary of State for Higher Education; representatives of the ministers of Italy, Spain and Tunisia; and Mr Jean-Christophe Menet, Head of Cabinet of the UfM Secretariat..
