GREENSTEP – GREEN Skills development for green transitions in Tunisia, Lebanon, and Jordan

Economic Development and Employment
Ongoing
Grant scheme projects

Context and objectives

Climate change can have deep consequences for the socioeconomic development of our societies. In Southern and Eastern Mediterranean countries, unsustainable practices, together with high levels of youth and women unemployment, insufficient green skills for future careers and the skills mismatch with the private sector represent common challenges for the sustainability of the region. Consequently, building a new and long-term new green economic model appears, as a crucial step for a sustainable and inclusive economic recovery of Mediterranean societies.

In this context, the project Greenstep aims to contribute to a green transformation of the economies in Tunisia, Lebanon, and Jordan by supporting green job creation in relevant sustainable sectors while considering local needs and constraints. Therefore, Greenstep addresses potential skills mismatches by considering current and future job market needs and local skills and trainings. Additionally, the project aims to support entrepreneurial activity and MSMEs in the green economy specifically in circular and resource-efficient sectors such as waste management, tourism, renewable energies, and sustainable agriculture. In Tunisia 30 MSMEs are to be selected from the beneficiaries of the SEARChED project, to ensure continuity to the previous UfM-funded initiative.

Furthermore, young people and women are disproportionately affected by the consequences of climate change and its impact on the labour market, with high rates of unemployment in the targeted countries. Thus, the Greenstep project aims at empowering these groups as drivers of green economy through green skills training, awareness raising and technical assistance for the development of green business plans.
