29-30 January 2019, Barcelona. The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean hosted this past 29 and 30 January the annual meeting of the UfM Energy Platforms in Barcelona, Spain. The UfM Energy Platforms are the only existing dialogue forum gathering all Euro-Mediterranean countries as well as the key stakeholders dealing with electricity markets, renewable energy, energy efficiency and gas in the Mediterranean region. The Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, Nasser Kamel, participated in the Ministerial Meeting of the WestMED initiative, which took place today in Algiers. The WestMED initiative seeks to promote specific measures to secure a sustainable development of the maritime economy in ten Western Mediterranean countries. In 2018, an average of one in four young North Africans is not in employment, education or training (NEETs) At the same time, in the Euro-Mediterranean region, hundreds of thousands of job positions are not filled due to a lack of suitable profiles. The skills gap is one of the main obstacles to the recruitment of young people. At a regional level, the Mediterranean New Chance Network mobilises and strengthens cooperation between stakeholders in the socio-professional integration of young people in eight Euro-Mediterranean countries, including the Second Chance Schools, and benefits more than 26,000 young people.
