Centuries of cultural exchanges have shaped the Euro-Mediterranean region, giving rise to diverse societies with unique customs, traditions, and languages. The Mediterranean is also a hotspot for biodiversity and geodiversity, hosting a rich array of species, habitats, and landscapes. Amidst its diversity, the region shares a common heritage and identity, which has led to the development of mutual values, aspirations, and a shared sense of belonging.
However, challenges that threaten regional peace and stability persist, highlighting the need to bridge cultural divides and promote mutual understanding between the two shores of the Mediterranean. This is a key objective of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM).
In line with this mission, the UfM promotes two initiatives that celebrate our shared Mediterranean identity, highlight the region’s diversity, and
enhance mutual understanding: The Day of the Mediterranean and the Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue. These initiatives provide valuable opportunities to showcase local projects and activities involving civil society actors while promoting intercultural dialogue and exchange. The Day of the Mediterranean serves as an annual occasion to spotlight positive stories and ongoing efforts across the region. It provides a platform to showcase the work of organisations and stakeholders committed to fostering cooperation and integration. Through various events, initiatives, and media engagement, the day aims to raise awareness, celebrate achievements, and nurture a sense of shared identity among Mediterranean communities.
Citizens, organisations, and institutions throughout the region are encouraged to take part in the Day of the Mediterranean. Whether by participating in or organising events, conferences, talks, exhibitions, festivals, or other initiatives, everyone can contribute and become part of this movement.

The rich legacy of centuries of cultural exchange in the region has inspired the creation of the “Mediterranean Capitals of Culture & Dialogue (MCCD).” Jointly promoted by the UfM and the Anna Lindh Foundation, this initiative celebrates regional diversity and fosters mutual understanding through cultural activities and active citizen participation. Each year, one city from the North and one from the South of the Mediterranean are designated as Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue.
These selected capitals develop cultural programmes that highlight their Euro-Mediterranean identities, engage their diverse populations, and encourage collaboration at the local level. The cultural programmes culminate in a grand celebration on the Day of the Mediterranean.
