Strengthening gender equality in the Mediterranean is at the core of UfM’s regional strategy

UfM country representatives and experts from the region are currently developing a mechanism to monitor the progress made on women’s rights, evaluate gender gaps and provide recommendations to policymakers. Women’s emporwement is a UfM priority working area. The organisation is currently promoting region-wide cooperation projects on women’s entrepreunership, health, gender equality, fight against gender violence and prevention of extremism. Union for the Mediterranean Member States join forces for a strengthened Civil Protection in the region

The 3rd Meeting of the Directors-General of Civil Protection of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Member States will launch a reflection to develop an action plan for strengthened Euro-Mediterranean cooperation on prevention campaigns, emergency response and crisis management. Through a common Civil Protection Mechanism, UfM Member States could play a key role in coordinating common responses to crises and cooperate on risk assessment, disaster prevention, preparedness and planning. Fourth UfM Women’s empowerment conference reaffirms key role of women in building inclusive societies and unlocking Mediterranean’s potential

The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), in partnership with the Portuguese Republic, organised the fourth edition of the regional conference on women’s empowerment in the Euro-Mediterranean region. In the presence of the President of Malta, Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, more than 300 participants including ministers, international experts and prominent actors of civil society and the private sector attended the conference, which coincided with the tenth anniversary of the UfM. Youth from the Mediterranean meet to design cooperation projects for the promotion of youth employability, women’s empowerment and sustainable development

The 1st Youth Forum for the Mediterranean took place in Tarragona from 7 to 9 July in the framework of the XVIII Mediterranean Games. WoRTH project: Presentation at the Women’s Cancer Days

5-7 April 2018, Marrakech. Improving access to prevention, early detection and treatment of women’s cancers is essential to contribute to women’s empowerment in the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean region, where too many women unnecessarily die from breast, cervical and ovarian cancer. Building strong and inclusive societies for all women and men in the Euro-Mediterranean region

Representing more than half the total population, women and young people constitute one of the greatest assets for stability and development in the Euro-Mediterranean region. According to recent studies, if the participation of women in the labour market equalled that of men, the regional GDP could rise by as much as 47% over the next decade. That means the region could realize an economic impact of around €490 billion annually.
