Mobilising Action Against Climate Change: UfM Secretariat attends United Nations Climate Summit 2014
Barcelona, 24 September 2014. Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Secretary General Fathallah Sijilmassi headed the UfM delegation attending the UN Climate Summit 2014, held yesterday at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The Summit, entitled “Catalyzing Action”, aimed to mobilise political willpower in order to champion an ambitious vision and accelerate progress on climate change. The call to action is a globally shared responsibility and also represents an opportunity to move toward sustainable prosperity.
In the Mediterranean region precisely, following the UfM Ministerial Meeting on Environment and Climate Change last May in Athens, a UfM Climate Change Expert Group (CCEG) was established to reinforce Mediterranean cooperation against climate change. The inaugural meeting of the UfM CCEG will be held in the first half of October in Barcelona.
During the Summit, the participating Heads of State and Government spoke in the morning, with ministerial-level representatives and stakeholders speaking later in the afternoon. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon concluded the sessions, reviewing the Summit’s accomplishments.
