UfM receives prestigious Creu de Sant Jordi for promotion of regional cooperation and dialogue
22 April 2025, Barcelona. The Union for the Mediterranean has been awarded one of the Catalan government’s highest distinctions, the Creu de Sant Jordi (‘Sant George’s Cross’), for its “outstanding work in promoting cooperation and dialogue among Mediterranean countries.”
The UfM joins the ranks of 21 individuals and 10 organisations who have been recognised this year for their exceptional contributions to Catalonia due to their civic and cultural impact. Headquartered in Barcelona’s Palau de Pedralbes, the UfM strengthens ties between 43 Northern, Southern and Eastern Euro-Mediterranean Member States, bringing them to the same table to address pressing regional challenges ranging from climate change to gender inequality or socioeconomic disparities. The organisation also champions impactful initiatives such as the Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue or the Day of the Mediterranean to nurture intercultural exchanges and embrace the region’s common heritage.
“The Union for the Mediterranean is more than honoured to be receiving this important award,” said UfM Secretary General Nasser Kamel upon hearing the news of his organisation’s win. “The Creu de Sant Jordi stands as a meaningful recognition that our efforts are making a difference in the region. The UfM upholds an ambitious mission and we will never tire of bringing people from all shores of our shared sea together.”
The Creu de Sant Jordi award ceremony will take place on 15 May at Catalonia’s National Art Museum (MNAC) in Barcelona.
