UfM’s seminar highlights refugee contributions to regional economic development
11-12 December 2024, Cairo, Egypt – The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Secretariat, supported by German Development Cooperation, successfully concluded the UfM Seminar on Refugee Entrepreneurship: Addressing Economic Recovery Amidst Conflict on 11-12 December 2024 in Cairo.
The seminar convened a diverse group of regional stakeholders to explore the pivotal role of refugee entrepreneurship in stimulating economic growth in both host nations and countries of origin. Discussions centred on effective strategies to empower and support refugee entrepreneurs.
In his opening remarks, Said Charna, Senior Economic Advisor at the UfM Secretariat, emphasised the significance of the seminar’s theme and the necessity for enhanced collaboration in this domain. Andreas Ruepp, Head of Private Sector Development at GIZ Egypt, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of joint efforts to support refugee entrepreneurs.
The event featured expert presentations that reframed the narrative to underscore the multifaceted positive impact refugees can have on host economies. Key themes included empowering refugee entrepreneurs through legal frameworks, skills development, and access to finance and markets. Inspiring success stories of refugees who have become successful entrepreneurs despite significant challenges were shared, offering valuable lessons and motivation for others.
Interactive icebreaker activities and competitions engaged participants, testing their knowledge about the topic and organisers. A networking session, facilitated by local partner Nakoll, provided further opportunities for meaningful connections among attendees.
In his closing remarks, Said Kajji, Project Analyst at the UfM Secretariat, reflected on the event’s objectives and outlined the next steps for follow-up actions. An outcome document summarising the main takeaways and recommendations will soon be available on the UfM’s website.
