10th UfM Working Group on Environment advances 2030GreenerMed Agenda

15 April 2026, Online. The 10th UfM Working Group on Environment meeting held online on 15 April brought together delegates from the 43 UfM countries and partner organisations to review developments and set priorities for the year ahead while fostering peer learning and regional cooperation.

Participants reviewed recent international and Euro‑Mediterranean environmental developments, assessed progress under the 2030GreenerMed Agenda, and exchanged on national priorities, needs and opportunities for cooperation. The session featured the presentation of a proposed update to the 2030GreenerMed narrative and the upcoming publication on the UfM Website of the 2nd UfM Results‑Based GreenerMed Monitoring Report.

Chaired by the UfM Co‑Presidency represented by the EU and Jordan, together with the UfM Secretariat, the meeting welcomed the recently appointed UfM Deputy Secretary General for Sustainable Development, Dr. Nisreen Tamimi, to the UfM environment stakeholder community.

Attention was given to the upcoming COP31 and the Med Pavilion, the progress in the submission of the CBD 7th National Reports, and the outcomes of COP24 of the Barcelona Convention. Participants underscored the continued relevance of the joint priorities agreed in the 2021 UfM Ministerial Declaration on Environment and Climate Action, especially as the Mediterranean faces mounting pressures from multidimensional crises closely linked to natural resources.

Many relevant initiatives were showcased around the three axes of 2030 GreenerMed Agenda, namely: the green, circular, and inclusive economy; pollution, with a focus on prevention; and biodiversity/ecosystem conservation and restoration. The meeting also highlighted the importance of promoting women and youth, strengthening social inclusion, and of maintaining the UfM as a platform for dialogue and collective action.

The meeting concluded with a strong call for unity and cooperation in challenging times. Countries reaffirmed their commitment to the GreenerMed priorities, implementing the 2030GreenerMed Agenda as shared cooperation framework, advancing joint actions and programmes, and continuing monitoring and reporting efforts, including support for the Agenda’s mapping exercise.

Participants expressed appreciation for the active engagement of countries and partner organisations, reinforcing the UfM’s role in driving regional cooperation on environment and green, circular and inclusive economy.
