UfM celebrated for advancing regional cooperation and dialogue at Creu de Sant Jordi ceremony
16 May 2025, Barcelona. The Union for the Mediterranean was honoured with a Creu de Sant Jordi (‘Sant George’s Cross’), one of the Catalan government’s highest distinctions, in an award ceremony last night at Catalonia’s National Art Museum (MNAC) in Barcelona. This recognition was granted for the UfM’s “outstanding work in promoting cooperation and dialogue among Mediterranean countries.”
The UfM was among the 21 individuals and 10 organisations who were recognised this year for their exceptional civic and cultural impact in Catalonia. Headquartered in Barcelona, the UfM strengthens ties between Euro-Mediterranean countries to address common challenges including climate change, gender inequality or socioeconomic disparities. It also champions initiatives such as the Mediterranean Capitals of Culture and Dialogue or the Day of the Mediterranean to promote intercultural exchanges and embrace the region’s common heritage.
“It is with a deep sense of humility and heartfelt gratitude that I am honoured to be here today receiving this prestigious award,” said UfM Secretary General Nasser Kamel. “The UfM strives to unite societies so they can thrive on their diversity, draw strength from their shared challenges, and unlock their full potential. We believe, above all, that our actions should contribute to building a stronger Euro-Mediterranean region where people never lose sight of the humanity in others.”
This recognition comes at a time the UfM is commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Barcelona Process, a landmark Euro-Mediterranean cooperation initiative. Launched in 1995, its commitment to uniting the region’s countries paved the way for the creation of the UfM in 2008. As the region faces profound disruption, the UfM is seizing upon this anniversary to call for renewed commitment and collaboration in alignment with its new strategic roadmap that will be approved by Member States at the 10th UfM Regional Forum in November.
