Climate data training for the Mediterranean

Overview

Set against the vibrant backdrop of Alexandria, the Mediterranean Capital of Culture 2025, this joint training by the European Centre for Medium‑Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) will take place on 16–17 December 2025 at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. It will explore how climate and atmospheric data can be harnessed to address two of the region’s most pressing challenges: advancing the renewable energy transition and protecting our shared cultural heritage.

The two‑day programme will equip participants from across the Mediterranean with practical skills to use data and tools from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS). Combining scientific expertise with regional insights, the event will demonstrate how these freely available resources can inform decision‑making, support climate adaptation strategies, and safeguard World Heritage sites from the growing risks of climate change.

Concept note and preliminary agenda
Register by 21 September 2025

Objectives

Empowering data-driven climate action

Equip participants with practical skills to access and apply atmospheric and climate data from Copernicus services (C3S and CAMS), helping them inform real-world decisions in renewable energy, cultural heritage, and sustainability.

Hands-on training with Copernicus tools

Introduce participants to user-friendly tools such as the C3S Climate Atlas, ERA Explorer, and Jupyter workflows through guided exercises and interactive sessions.

Tailored Mediterranean solutions

Facilitate collaborative design and testing of Copernicus-based responses to specific regional challenges — from energy transition planning to safeguarding World Heritage sites at risk from climate change.

Regional exchange and peer learning

Create space for cross-border dialogue and collaboration, allowing professionals from across the Mediterranean to share insights, case studies, and best practices.

Capacity building

Translate complex climate and atmospheric data into actionable insights for ministries, researchers, and policy support staff, ensuring scientific knowledge feeds into regional strategies and public decision-making.

Participant profile

This training is designed for professionals and institutions in the Mediterranean region who engage in climate-related planning, policy, or technical support, but are
not necessarily specialised in climate data or modelling.

Public sector professionals

Ministry staff, government representatives, and local or regional authorities working in sectors such as energy, environment, cultural heritage, urban planning, or disaster risk management — especially those who work with climate information but do not have technical expertise in climate data.

Applied researchers and scientists

Professionals in environmental science, energy systems, or heritage conservation who would benefit from using climate and atmospheric data in their work, without necessarily having a background in climate modelling or remote sensing.

Technical staff supporting policy

Data analysts, GIS specialists, and IT personnel who support institutional or governmental teams by sourcing, processing, or visualising information to inform climate‑related strategies — even if they are not domain experts.

Date and location

Bibliotheca Alexandrina, 16-17 December 2025.

Background and context

The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) have established a Memorandum of Understanding in 2021, fostering collaboration in various areas, including training and capacity building with the aim to stimulate the uptake of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) and the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) products and services in the Mediterranean region.

The purpose of the training is to develop skills amongst stakeholders such as technical and decision-making staff in ministries, and the research community in the Mediterranean region (particularly the Southern Mediterranean region) to harness the potential of C3S and CAMS data, tools and services, for societal benefit across relevant sectors.

To assess specific needs, a survey on training and capacity building requirements was circulated among UfM Member States Focal Points. Based on the insights gathered, a two-day training event is proposed for December 2025. The training will leverage and provide a platform for other activities carried out in the context of the ECMWF-UfM partnership. This includes the recently launched Demonstrator cases to support renewable energy transition across the Mediterranean, but also the demo Apps previously developed for which Alexandria is a case study, namely on the Risk to World Heritage Sites across the Mediterranean from rising sea levels and international advances such as the launch of the UNESCO report on “Climate Change in Mediterranean World Heritage Cities (UNESCO, 2025).
