UfM countries gather in Brussels for the 20th UfM Regional Platform on Sustainable Blue Economy
14 October 2026, Brussels – On 14 October UfM countries, stakeholders, and experts gathered in Brussels to continue making progress towards the 2021 UfM Ministerial Declaration on SBE and its related Roadmap.
UfM Deputy Secretary General for Sustainable Development Nisreen Tamimi welcomed the renewed regional momentum on Sustainable Blue Economy: “In a context where regional cooperation, dialogue, and shared strategic frameworks are more important than ever, the solid yet flexible regional partnership on SBE continues to act as a powerful driver for Sustainable Development, as a ‘glue’ across the region, and as a pillar of the Euro-Mediterranean cooperation”.
Co-Chaired by the UfM EU (DG MARE) and Jordan Co-Presidency, the Regional Platform marked a key milestone to share policy updates including on the implementation of the EU Ocean Pact and SBE-related aspects of the Med Pact, to foster convergence of efforts at regional level and the emergence of joint SBE initiatives and programmes, and to enhance synergies with the WestMED Initiative and with key strategic partners including Interreg Euro-MED and Interreg NEXT-Med.
The Regional Platform was also the occasion to host annual reporting by the countries within the agreed Monitoring, Reporting, and Evaluation (MRE) system of the Ministerial/Roadmap; to share a status update on the Blue Mediterranean Partnership (BMP); to set the path towards the 3rd UfM Stakeholder Conference on SBE; and to exchange views on future deliberations building on a decade of successful regional cooperation on SBE.
On the day after (October 15, morning only), countries continued the dialogue on a potential Blue Economy Sea-basin strategy in the Eastern Mediterranean, through a dedicated back-to-back Working Session.
