• The Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) is actively participating in this year’s COP22, designated as the “COP of Action”, to launch specific regional initiatives and projects aimed at helping achieve the Paris Agreement targets in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

• The Union for the Mediterranean and the European Commission will launch the UfM Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Platform (REEE) to promote progressive deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency measures in order to foster socio-economic development in the Euro-Mediterranean region.

• The Union for the Mediterranean together with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will launch a major Mediterranean project for renewable energy in the private sector. The innovative “SEMED Private Renewable Energy Framework (SPREF)” is a €227.5 million financing framework that will mobilise further investment from other parties of up to €834 million and aims to stimulate the development of private renewable energy markets in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Jordan.

The UfM Secretariat is partnering with France’s Agency for Environment and Energy Management (ADEME) in the launch of a competition to foster public initiatives promoting adaptation to climate change impacts.

• Keeping the global temperature rise to below 2oC, the target set by the Paris Agreement, calls for actions that cannot only rely on nationally-determined contributions. A coordinated regional approach on Climate Action is needed to successfully achieve this target in the Mediterranean, one of the most sensitive areas in terms of the impact of climate change.

• Over 50 climate experts from UfM member countries, representatives from international organisations working in the field of climate action (UNEP, EBRD, etc.) and civil society representatives are gathering today under the auspices of the French Ministry for Environment, Energy and the Sea, as COP21 Presidency, to agree on a work programme for a regional agenda on climate action in the Mediterranean.

• The first meetings of the UfM Regional Electricity Market (REM) Platform and the UfM Gas Platform take place in Barcelona.

• Representatives from 20 UFM Member States discuss the integration of electricity markets and the development of a gas market in the region.

IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol and UfM Secretary General Fathallah Sijilmassi signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Paris to undertake joint initiatives that effectively contribute towards sustainable development in the region.
