The President of the Subcommittee on Human Rights of the European Parliament, Elena Valenciano, supports UfM Secretariat’s efforts in promoting human, social and economic development in the region
Barcelona, 10 November 2014 – The Secretary General of the Union for the Mediterranean, Fathallah Sijilmassi, welcomed Elena Valenciano, member of the European Parliament and president of the Subcommittee on Human Rights of the European chamber, on Thursday at the premises of the UfM Secretariat at Palau Pedralbes, Barcelona.
Elena Valenciano as member of the Parliamentary Assembly-Union for the Mediterranean (PA-UfM) underlined during the meeting the importance of strengthening tights and enhancing the relations between the UfM and the European Parliament and stressed the relevance of the Euro-Mediterranean policies aimed at create better conditions for the citizenship.
The Secretary General and the Parliamentarian discussed on the implication of the UfM Secretariat to respond to the region’s population needs to promote human, social and economic development, in particular providing the region’s women with stronger role in society. The Secretary General remarked during meeting the UfM Secretariat great interest and effort in fostering gender equality and empowerment of women in the Euro-Mediterranean region through concrete regional projects and highlighted the launching of “Skills for Success: Employability skills for Women” in Beirut last October.
