Civil society and youth’s views for an inclusive and sustainable future in the Mediterranean

100 representatives of civil society, youth organisations and non-state actors from the Euro-Mediterranean met to discuss regional challenges during the UfM Regional Dialogue on “Shared views on key issues in the Mediterranean”, on 22-23 May 2019, at the Pedralbes Palace in Barcelona.

These exchanges contributed to the analysis of achievements and related challenges and the role different stakeholders (youth organizations, CSOs, institutions and international/regional agencies, …) play in promoting participation and opportunities to develop new projects and initiatives that tackle key issues in the Euro-Mediterranean. The regional dialogue’s key themes were environment, energy, water, climate change and sustainable development, economy and competitiveness, employment and education and women’s and girls’ empowerment (transversal theme).

The sessions focused on inclusive and sustainable development, a key factor in addressing the root causes of the current challenges facing the Euro-Mediterranean region (see the agenda).

UfM Regional Dialogue on “Shared views on key issues in the Mediterranean”, on 22-23 May 2019m

Objectives

The Dialogue aimed at contributing to the creation of synergies and complementary actions on the ground. The conclusions will be presented to both the UfM Country Representatives and the Partner Organizations, in order to enable a potential follow-up and consideration in their discussions and activity programmes.

Furthermore, on the eve of the Summit of the Two Shores[1], these conclusions will also be presented as recommendations and project proposals addressed to the 100 stakeholders who will meet on 11 June in Tunis to prepare for the Summit. The regional dialogue will thus contribute to the Summit of the Two Shores’ debates by putting forward the views of youth and civil society in UfM countries on selected themes for the Summit.

[1] Initiative of the French Republic to strengthen ties between the two shores of the Mediterranean, a “Summit of the two shores” will be organized in June 2019 in Marseille, bringing the 5 + 5 countries together (Portugal Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Mauritania, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya). This Summit will focus on environment, energy, youth, education, culture and economy.
