19–20 June 2025. The Union for the Mediterranean (UFM), in collaboration with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the National Office for Science Advice (ONAC) in Spain, is pleased to announce a two-day training program hosted in Madrid at the Complejo de la Moncloa, Presidency of the Government of Spain.. This program is designed for scientists keen to enhance their understanding of policy processes and their ability to contribute to evidence-informed policymaking, ensuring that scientific insights effectively inform policy decisions in the Mediterranean region.

Built on the JRC’s Competences Framework for Scientists, and presenting examples related to the Mediterranean context, this training addresses the theoretical framework and challenges of Science for Policy.

This highly interactive training will equip participants with essential tools and strategies to engage effectively in the policy ecosystem, improve science communication, and bridge the gap between scientific research and policy implementation.

Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your skills and make a meaningful impact on policymaking in the Mediterranean region. Apply now and be part of the change!

Objectives

The Mediterranean region faces complex challenges such as climate change, water scarcity, energy supply, and food sustainability. Scientific insights are crucial for addressing these issues by informing policymaking with state-of-the-art knowledge, context, and available options.

Strong communication channels between decisionmakers and the scientific community are a prerequisite to a prosperous Mediterranean region. A necessity highlighted by the UfM Ministerial Declaration on Research and Innovation (2022) which emphasizes the need “to orient national-level policies, smart specialisation strategies and programmes across all UfM Member States according to the priorities of Climate Change, Health, and Renewable Energies”.

However, interactions with governments and institutions require dedicated know-how, not yet mainstreamed in scientific curricula.

This training will:

  • Introduce the Policymaking Process: Gain a comprehensive understanding of how science can inform policy decisions.
  • Enhance Communication Skills: Learn to effectively communicate research findings to policymakers and broader audiences.
  • Navigate Science-Policy Interaction: Explore strategies to overcome challenges in the science-policy interface specific to the Mediterranean.

Who Should Apply?

This training is open to researchers, PhD candidates, and experts working in science-related fields who display a keen interest in Science for Policy and evidence-based policymaking. The training is open to experts and researchers from all disciplines.

  • Sponsored Participants: A total of 20 participants will be fully sponsored by the Union for the Mediterranean, covering travel and accommodation expenses. Preference shall be accorded to participants from non-EU UfM member states (South and East Mediterranean), and sponsorship shall be offered based on UfM rules on eligibility.
  • Self-Sponsored Participants: An additional 5 seats are available for self-sponsored participants.

A maximum of 25 seats are available for this training.

Selection Criteria:

Candidates will be selected based on their professional profile, clarity and depth of answers, and consideration for regional and gender diversity.

Application deadline is set for 18 April 2025.

Location & Dates

  • Date: 19–20 June 2025
  • Location: Complejo de La Moncloa, Avenida Puerta de Hierro s/n, Madrid, 28071, Spain
